Overview

Brutten Global was established in 1978 by Marc Brutten and pursues control-oriented investments in asset-backed businesses and properties. Its website says the company has raised US$8 billion of debt and equity, reached $15 billion in transaction volume and acquired more than 1,750 buildings, operating through the real-estate brands Westcore, Westcore Europe, WestTown and Brixton Capital and the structured-finance units Westcore Financial and Radnor Capital. Its Private Equity Group, founded in 1986, focuses on distressed companies in need of turnaround capital and currently seeks service businesses that complement the real-estate portfolio; listed holdings include Boatsetter, ClassWallet, United Apartment Group, Liberty Waste Solutions and EarlyShares, and it invested in Andersen Commercial Plumbing in July 2018 and exited via corporate sale in 2022. In 2004 it took part in the Bruce Ratner-led group that bought the New Jersey Nets, which was sold in 2010.

Investment thesis

Invests long term in inefficiently operated, often-overlooked and somewhat contrarian assets with upside potential across investment classes, taking control positions where value can be created; the private equity group targets distressed companies in need of turnaround capital and service businesses that complement the real-estate portfolio.
