Overview
Fremont Group is the family office for the Bechtel family. It started over 40 years ago as a subsidiary of Bechtel Group, the engineering and construction company founded in 1898, and is now an independent private office in its third generation of family leadership, providing investment management, tax, financial planning, estate planning and philanthropic services to multiple generations of the family. It invests for the long term both through external managers and directly in companies, aiming to build businesses in partnership with founders and management teams. Fremont Private Holdings (FPH), its direct private investment arm, makes long-term investments in growing family- and founder-owned operating businesses and, per its archived 2022 web page, invested only permanent family capital; in December 2023 it acquired the Peterbilt dealership group Hunter Truck together with the company's CEO, and the Fremont Group co-led BrightPlan's $9.5 million Series A in 2021.
Investment thesis
Long-term investing through external managers and direct stakes in companies, with a stated goal of building and growing businesses in partnership with founders and management teams; per its archived 2022 page, FPH targeted growing family- and founder-owned operating businesses (industrials/manufacturing, business services, auto dealerships), considered majority and minority positions, and avoided businesses with technology or business-model risk.
