Overview
Patterson Thoma is a privately held family investment company in Dallas, founded in 1982, that invests across private equity, venture capital, real estate and specialty finance. Its principal, Dan Patterson, founded the fundless sponsor Transition Capital Partners and has focused on the family office since agreeing in 2016 to sell his partnership interest in TCP. The office says it does not invest in funds, typically invests $100k to $20M, does not invest in international companies, and makes both equity and debt investments. It also says it has served as co-GP of five real estate funds and seven consumer credit funds, so it manages capital from outside investors alongside the family's own. It led Cariloop's Series A in 2020 and was the first seed investor in Adaptive 3D Technologies.
Investment thesis
Describes itself as a generalist that prefers direct investments and partnerships and likes 'story' deals. In early-stage companies it only invests once they have revenue and proven market demand. It does not invest in cannabis or crypto, and avoids consumer products, food and beverage, capital-intensive, highly cyclical and commodity-based companies.
