Overview

SPRIND GmbH is the German federal agency for breakthrough innovation, based in Leipzig and wholly owned by the Bundesrepublik Deutschland. It identifies and finances potential breakthrough innovations through validation contracts, challenges and 'Funken', R&D funding and, since the SPRIND-Freiheitsgesetz, equity stakes, convertible loans and mezzanine finance. In equity and mezzanine deals at least 30% of a financing round must come from independent private investors, and SPRIND can invest pari passu. Its project list tags companies such as AATec, CPTx, Gixel, MicroBubbles and SNIPR Biome with 'Beteiligung/Wandeldarlehen' financing, and it took part in the 2026 rounds of Hypersonica and Cellbricks.
