ABOUT

BackFund was created in 2021 by Karel Escobar, formerly of Google for Startups, and Adrián Gorritxo to invest in Spanish startups at their earliest stages, with a community of investor-mentors it calls Backers. Its first vehicle, closed in 2024, raised €1M from 50 small investors (entrepreneurs, corporate innovation heads and tech employees) at €20,000 each and invested €50,000 in each of 16 startups chosen from more than 1,500 applicants. It leads or co-leads pre-seed and seed rounds in B2B companies with a bias to deep tech and energy transition, and said in June 2024 that it planned a new early-stage deep-tech vehicle.
