Overview

Foundamental was founded in January 2019 with $60 million in commitments and describes itself as the global investor in architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) and construction technology. It invests from day zero, leading first institutional rounds with first cheques of $500k to $5 million, and focuses on the CapEx-heavy project economy: infrastructure, AEC, heavy supply chains and lot-size-1 manufacturing. The management company, Foundamental Management GmbH, is based in Berlin, with investment team members across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. The firm says it has grown to more than $300 million and was investing from its third fund as of late 2025.

Investment thesis

Searches for 'vertical singularities' in project-based, CapEx-defined sectors that 'stack atoms': construction and building materials, infrastructure, renovation, 2D/3D and computer-aided design and heavy-industry supply chains, plus opportunistic bets in shipbuilding and aerospace. Leads pre-seed, seed and Series A rounds globally, reserves more than half of each fund for follow-ons and makes no investments outside its focus sectors.
